Inspiration:
This project was inspired by the recent information found regarding my
brother’s death in Vietnam. Warrant Officer Jesus DeLa Rosa Jr. was
killed on July 19,1966 when the UH-1D helicopter he piloted collided with
an L-19 reconnaissance plane along the Cambodian border West of
Pleiku. For over thirty years all my family and I knew was that his
helicopter had collided with another craft in mid air. On July of 2004, while
I was searching the Internet, I came across some time line journals written
by Lt.Thomas A. Jones assigned to the 1st Battalion 14th Inf. of the 25th
Inf. Div. who on that day witnessed my brothers last moments of his life. (If
interested see page three on the web site below). These journals took me
back to that place and time to read how at approximately 1,500 ft the left
wing of the plane sheared of the main rotor causing the helicopter to
tumble to the ground and burst into flames. Most eyes on the helicopter
were spotting mortar rounds falling to the East. The pilot of the L-19 was
looking for enemy targets towards the West. They never saw each other.
All seven men on both aircraft lost their lives. Thirty-eight years later our
gracious God allowed my family and me to have closure and the healing is
now taking place. A little over a year ago I began to plan and organize
support to construct the Ohio Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial Park. Since
then, I have seen God’s divine hand and direction in every phase of this
project. Lt. Jones and I have become close friends. He is also assisting
me in the development of this memorial tribute. I have also made contact
with Capt. Raymond Johnson’s two sons. They were in the same situation
as I was. They had no idea what happened to their dad. I have sort of
adopted them as my own. They are wonderful young men. I am also
paying tribute to their dad, and 1st Sgt Yoshiiwa Nagato of the 25th Inf Div.
I have not been able to locate his family. I have formed a special bond with
the Long family. WO 1 Johnny Long was the A/C on my brother’s
helicopter. Greg Long was eleven months old when he lost his dad. It is a
great privilege and honor to bring the Ohio Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial
Park to Akron, Ohio. The Ohio Vietnam Wall will display the names of the
3,095 soldiers killed from the State of Ohio while serving in Southeast
Asia. Our goal is to pay tribute to allwho made the ultimate sacrifice for
their country. My brother’s name will not appear on the wall, He was from
San Antonio, Texas. However, the UH-1 helicopter that will be displayed
will be a tribute to WO DeLa Rosa and his fellow crew members of the
119th Assault Helicopter Co.
